He was a member of three commercially successful bands: James Gang, Barnstorm, and Eagles. He also gained fame as a solo artist and prolific session musician. He is ranked 54th on Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" rankings. Since December 2011 he has an honorary degree in music from Kent State University.
