Annie, can you hear me?
There's work for me to do
I'll be home in the morning
But now it's time for me to go.
That was the last she heard him say
Before Annie ran away.
They'd always been so happy
Well, at least that how it seemed
But he was unaware of
the things that Annie dreamed.
And it lasted up until that day
When Annie ran away.
He went to see her mother
Said 'Mother, where can she be?
When I got home this morning
She was nowhere to be seen.'
But Mother replied 'I cannot say
Why Annie ran away.'
(And Mother sang:) 'She may have joined the navy
To sail the seven seas
Or run off to the circus
To fly the high trapeze
And I know you wanted her to stay
But your Annie ran away.'
(And he cries)'Annie, can you hear me?
It feels so cold inside'
He picks up his guitar and
Sits down by the fireside
But he cannot find a tune to play
Since Annie ran away
And he prays for her return each day
Since Annie Ran away
But that was fifty years today
When Annie ran away
