Family - британская группа прогрессивного рока, выработавшая необычный стиль, в котором присутствовали элементы блюза, фолка, джаза, рок-кабаре и психоделии. Уникальной характеристикой группы было постоянное присутствие в ней более двух мультиинструменталистов (Рик Грич, Джон "Поли" Палмер, Джон Уэттон), создававших сложные звуковые коллажи. Регулярно гастролируя в связках с Jethro Tull, Ten Years After, The Nice и ELP, Family, в отличие от них, так и не добились успеха в Америке, оставшись в истории вечными лидерами британского андеграунда конца 60-х - начала 70-х годов. Свою первую группу The Farinas (позже превратившуюся в The Roaring Sixties) гитарист Джон «Чарли» Уитни образовал, будучи студентом арт-колледжа в Лестере. С ним играли бас-гитарист Тим Кирчин, ударник Харри Овеналл и саксофонист Джим Кинг. В 1965 году Кирчина заменил Рик Грич, Овеналла - Роб Таунсенд, а год спустя в группу пришёл Роджер Чепмен, обладавший голосом, который (по выражению одного из критиков) «…мог убить небольшого зверька в радиусе сотни метров». Впоследствии, однако, именно вокалист стал ахиллесовой пятой Family. Возможности его были ограничены узким диапазоном, чего сам он, по-видимому, не понимал и постоянно пытался взять высокие ноты, которые ему не давались. Один из критиков назвал вокальный стиль Чепмена «электрическим блеянием», другой охарактеризовал его формулой: Боб Дилан + Марк Болан. Название Family предложил американский продюсер Ким Фоули: группа, выступавшая в мешковатых двубортных костюмчиках, эксплуатировала гангстерский имидж. Уже в 1967 году Family были объявлены «новой британской сенсацией» и выпустили дебютный альбом Music in a Doll's House (1968), которому предшествовал сингл Scene Through The Eye Of A Lens/Gypsy Woman (октябрь, 1967). При том, что вокал Чепмена имел прямое отношение к традициям блюза и ритм-энд-блюза, аранжировки, насыщенные струнными, меллотроном, духовыми инструментами, обладали всеми признаками раннего арт/прогрессив-рока. Альбом поднялся в Британии до 35 места и был восторженно встречен критикой... В 1969 году Рик Грич перешёл в Blind Faith и его заменил Джон Вейдер (экс-Eric Burdon and The Animals). В конце 1969 года (после выступления группы вместе с The Rolling Stones в Гайд-парке) из состава вышел Кинг и на его место пришёл мультиинструменталист Джон «Поли» Палмер. Этот четвёртый альбом Аnyway разделён на концертную и студийную части (сторона 1 записана на концерте в Fairfield Halls в Croydon (London); сторона 2 - коллекция студийных записей). Здесь Family перешли от экспериментального рока к более или менее ортодоксальным структурам. Пластинка была встречена критиками сдержанно... После распада Family Уитни и Чепмен образовали блюз-роковую группу Streetwalkers (есть на блоге).

Family - British band of progressive rock, have developed an unusual style in which there were elements of blues, folk, jazz, rock and cabaret and psychedelia. A unique characteristic of the group was a constant presence in her more than two multi-instrumentalist (Rick Grich, John "Poli" Palmer, John Wetton), create complex sound collages. Regularly touring in conjunction with Jethro Tull, Ten Years After, The Nice and ELP, Family, unlike them, did not succeed in America, remained in the history of the eternal leader of the British underground scene of the late 60's - early 70-ies. His first band The Farinas (later turned into The Roaring Sixties) guitarist John "Charlie" Whitney formed, as a student at the art college in Leicester. With him playing bass player Tim NNR, drummer Harry Ovenall and saxophonist Jim King. In 1965, NNR has replaced Rick Grich, Ovenalla - Rob Townsend, and a year later the group came Roger Chapman, who had a voice that (in the words of one critic) "... could kill a small animal in a radius of hundreds of meters." Subsequently, however, it has become the Achilles heel of the vocalist Family. Its possibilities have been limited to a narrow range, which he apparently did not understand and was always trying to take the high notes that he was given. One critic described the vocal style of the Chapman "electric bleating", another described his formula: Bob Dylan + Marc Bolan. Family name proposed American producer Kim Fowley: artist, speaking in baggy double-breasted suits, exploited gangster image. Already in 1967, Family have been declared a "new British sensation" and released their debut album, Music in a Doll's House (1968), which was preceded by the single Scene Through The Eye Of A Lens / Gypsy Woman (October 1967). With that, the vocals Chapman had a direct relationship to the traditions of blues and rhythm-and-blues arrangements, full strings, mellotron, horns, have all the characteristics of early art / progressive rock. The album peaked in the UK to 35 locations and has been enthusiastically received by critics ... In 1969, Rick Grich moved to Blind Faith and was replaced by John Weider (ex-Eric Burdon and The Animals). At the end of 1969 (after the band's performance with The Rolling Stones in Hyde Park) from the King came out and was replaced by multi-instrumentalist John "Poli" Palmer. This fourth album Anyway divided into concert and studio of the (side 1 is recorded at a concert in the Fairfield Halls in Croydon (London); side 2 - a collection of studio recordings). Here Family moved from experimental rock to a more or less orthodox structures. The album was greeted by critics with restraint ... After the collapse of the Family Whitney Chapman formed the blues-rock band Streetwalkers (there on the blog).
