NINE SOLDIERS N BALTIMORE
I only saw what I saw – I only saw what I saw
Nine soldiers in Baltimore – for 50,000 in the Vietnam War
They’re makin’ plans at the grocery store – so we don’t have to go there no more
The Catholic Church & the K of C – always meant so much to me
They closed their ears & shut the door – (to) nine soldiers in Baltimore
I only saw what I saw – I only saw what I saw
Philip Berrigan &Father Dan- & seven brave souls took a stand
Three missioners from the Maryknoll’s too – a Christian brother from old St Lu
They took the draft files with a “thanks a lot” – then went and burned them in the parking lot
So we don’t have to die there no more – nine soldiers in Baltimore
instrumental
on December 7, 2002 – an apostle of peace – who spent 11 years in prison - Philip Berrigan passed away.. this song is in his memory
I only saw what I saw – I only saw what I saw
May 17 ’68 – is not a day we celebrate
But it’s in the hearts of so many – and those hearts are pure as any
That’s the day that the Catonsville Nine – they stood up and they walked the line
They burned the files just like they planned – took the law in there own hands
So raise the flag and pledge allegiance – and speak up if you’ve got a grievance
Or why the hell are you livin’ here for – (said) nine soldiers in Baltimore.
