Все это можно было найти в жанре пасторали, где пастухи и пастушки нежились на лоне природы и вкушали покой и счастье чистой полудетской любви . Именно этой, столь модной в те времена пасторальной теме, посвящена ария « Если любишь , прелестный пастушок». В ней есть все атрибуты аристократической пасторали: мягкие придыхания, легкая жалоба и кокетство без конца, когда за одним сказанным словом подразумевается множество несказанных. Эта музыка крайне подвижна и изменчива; она начинается как чувствительная ария с притворными вздохами, продолжается как томное лирическое признание и завершается как танец с притопыванием каблучками или как отповедь обиженной красавицы – и все это богатство умещается в одну музыкальную тему. XVIII век был веком лицедейства, актерства, и даже любовь часто превращалась в светскую игру, где персонажи соревновались в остроте произнесенных слов и красоте театральных поз и жестов.
