Безынициативные и вялые герои чеховских повестей осознают безысходность ситуации, страдают от нее, но не способны к поступкам. Пошлость окружающей действительности убивает в них стремление к идеалу, решимость и мужество.

Their leitmotif is powerlessness in the face of the inertia and boredom of the hopeless Russian life, causing melancholy and despair. The lack of initiative and sluggish heroes of Chekhov's stories are aware of the hopelessness of the situation, suffer from it, but are not capable of actions.
